Heroes.

We celebrated Father's Day on Sunday, and I was lucky enough to get to spend it with my dad. He really is my hero. He taught me all those important lessons in life, like the value of hard work, family is always first, and money isn't everything. These lessons were learned following him around the farm yard as he did his chores, walking quickly to keep up with his big steps. I think that was the best part of growing up on the farm, is that he was never far away. I never had to wait for him to come home from work, if I wanted to see him I just walked out to the road where he was cultivating or swathing and he'd pick me up when he got to the end and we'd go for a round in the field. I fell asleep most of the time, but all I wanted was to be near him.

I believe that my father can fix anything, and knows how everything works. I have phoned him when a squirrel was running around my house (7am on a Sunday morning) knowing that he couldn't possibly get rid of it, being that he lived in Taber, but his calm reassuring voice would get me through the process of squirrel elimination. I don't think I have owned a piece of property that my dad hasn't improved. When I lived in Lethbridge, my neighbours wanted to be adopted into his family for the yardwork alone!

These are special bonds that children have with their fathers, and I see it with Jude and Jason. Speaking of heroes, here's Jude with Jason on Father's Day giving him Guitar Hero for the Wii. (It's interesting how Jude is able to order this online with a personalized gift card in time for Father's Day, and I got a salad spinner for Mother's Day...nothing says love like clean lettuce.)

Here's to fathers and heroes. Enjoy your week.
